:Apogee Impose

At A Glance
Prepress departments were suffering with template based imposition software. Instead of using pre-defined templates, :Apogee Impose is using job information, such as page size, product part information like cover, body and insert, and available equipment to calculate and propose the optimal imposition scheme.

How It Works

Auto Impose
The “Auto Impose” feature automatically calculates, based on certain parameters, the optimal way of to impose the entire job with a minimum of paper waste as a basic rule. It also takes job-specific parameters into account, such as page or sheet size, color, binding style, folding information, page orientation and press parameters like gripper margin.

:Apogee Impose

In addition, the user can define rules to be applied during this calculation. These rules include positioning folding schemes and sorting signatures. Depending on production requirements, these rules are defined as mandatory or as preferred.

The ability to customize folding schemes and to limit this list of choice for Auto Impose, allows navigating prepress exactly as it is wanted by production, depending on the available equipment.

The Product View
The Product View displays the graphical representation of the created imposition. Here, the user has the opportunity to examine the proposed imposition. If necessary changes can be made very intuitively: the user can decide to adapt the splitting up of signatures - for example, 16 pages in two times 8 pages, he can change the used folding schemes, or re-assign the folding schemes to a press sheet, change the press sheet format, the binding style and the press. All changes are possible by drag and drop and immediately pages will be renumbered and the view refreshed. These actions can be revoked with the undo function.

The Product View

The production view gives the user a complete overview of the imposition. From left to right the product characteristics, product parts, used folding schemes, press sheets and used printing presses are displayed.

The: Apogee Impose Inspector is a floating palette that adapts to the selected item. It allows to analyze and change the position and definition of individual elements, in detail.

The Inspector-view is available for e.g. printing marks, product parts, printing machines and press sheets

This view offers a precise control over the marks on a signature, and a ruler measure function. Auto-placed marks can be deleted while others can be added manually. In addition to the print marks, trim & bleed, fold sheet block(s), gripper edge, etc. are visible. This view can be customized to individual needs.

Margins and gutters
Typical distances on a signature, like trim and gutter, can be defined on a global job level or for specific parts. The inspector allows users to change values for one or more selected signatures with one click. When selecting the correct margin, :APOGEE Impose offers a “close by” select-tool that automatically lists all elements around your mouse pointer.

Margins and Gutters

The size of objects on a signature in the sheet view (e.g the page trim), or the distances between the objects (e.g. edge to mark distance) can be displayed by using the measure-tool.

With the :Apogee Impose mark engraver, “intelligent” mark sets can be defined. A mark set includes several marks that are placed dynamically relative to a chosen reference. The placement can be unconditional, based on rules or manually forced by the user.

Mark Engraver

To define variables, a text-sensitive filter function assistant automatically proposes a list of available variables, based on input entered by the user.

Mark Engraver2 Mark Engraver3

Marks can be positioned relative to a variety of references, like fold sheet, inner/outer fold, inner/outer spine, lowest/highest page.

They can also be positioned in different user-defined layers.

Conflict handling will control the placement of marks in relation to the other elements on the press sheet. Marks that overlap, , need clipping, positioned in a page or in the bleed area, are examples that will generate warnings or errors in the snag list.

Custom color bars
Currently in many imposition applications, handling a custom color bar is only possible with major manual effort: for a control strip, either a separate press sheet format file is used or the left and right overhanging parts have to be covered manually with white areas.

Color Bars

In :Apogee Impose this process is fully automated. For all press sheet formats, the same PDF or EPS marks are always re-used. The user has to define the distance from the press sheet edge and whether the first and last cell in the color bar needs to be remain. This is often a prerequisite for press controlling systems, in order to get correct measurements. With these color bar settings, only one mark set is needed for all sheet formats.

Color Bars2 Color Bars3

Both the horizontal distance from the sheet edge and the setting “clip at cell boundaries" automatically result in the required amount of measurement fields (cells) for each press sheet width. Omitted cells are shaded red.

:Apogee Impose offers two ways to compensate shingling: either the page content can be shifted or scaled in width-direction (inwards and /or outwards).

Drawback of the shifting approach is that page content can disappear in the spine. This can be avoided using scaling. The full page will be downscaled to the available width.

The shingling compensation value(s) can be calculated automatically or chosen manually.

Folding schemes
:APOGEE Impose is based on folding schemes which are independent of the page format. Agfa Graphics includes the standardized library of the CIP4 organization, which can be extended at any time to meet customer specific needs. Also, the user can create subsets of folding schemes. This wayAuto Impose will only only pick the schemes that are activated in the selected subset.

Imposition Mockup
The imposition layout can be exported as PDF file, containing all the signatures, or only a selected set of them including pagination, marks and dimensions.

It includes all or the selected set of signatures of the order, including pagination, marks and dimensions.

Unbound work (Step & Repeat)
In addition to bound products, such as brochures or magazines, :APOGEE Impose handles unbound orders. Here, AUTO Impose calculates and draws the optimal combination on the press sheet, based on the format and run length of the individual products. This result is also based on rules to minimize paper waste and to allow for slitting at the finishing stage.

Edit Impose - Repeat Imposition
Next to the automatic imposition, a manual mode can also be used in :APOGEE Impose. Here the user can select the step-by-step and a folding scheme. He also can adapt the proposed press sheet format and drag the press sheet on the printing press.

After placement and control of the marks on the resulting signature, the “repeat imposition” will apply all elements of the “base signature” to the remaining pages or signatures.

Unbound Work

"Repeat imposition” repeats all settings and marks, that have been defined by the user for a print sheet (Sig 1), on the remaining pages (Sig 2, Sig 3). The result is a fully imposed job.

Why is this Important?
:Apogee Impose is an innovative solution that changes the prepress way of thinking by using job information instead of templates to determine imposition. This approach will help prepress departments saving valuable time and money in the imposition process.
